The Stumblers are a pretty inclusive bunch; we welcome walkers of all inclinations, from those who just want an excuse for a sociable Sunday stroll to those with a taste for adventure.
Stumblers’ AwayDay Weekends
We try to organise one weekend away every year; partly to enable us to enjoy interesting countryside further afield and partly because they’re just great fun! These are self-organised events; once we’ve agreed a location and dates it’s up to individuals to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements. But we try to get into the same B&B whenever possible and (usually) one or more of us will know the area and will propose a choice of walks.
Usually, we travel on the Friday to leave the Saturday clear for a whole day’s excursion. A shorter walk on the Sunday morning leaves time for a leisurely drive home afterwards.
Stumblers have enjoyed a variety of excellent weekends away, mostly in the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales national parks, which are readily accessible and offer outstanding walking. Oh, and outstanding pubs too… We’ve even been as far as northern Spain. You can read about our adventures in the News section.
Big Stuff
We don’t, as a group, go for serious treks, but one or two of our members do and we would certainly encourage anyone of an adventurous disposition to do so. Even within the UK, there is a wide choice of long-distance trails to tackle; they are easy to get to and well documented.
However, even the easier ones are of a different level of challenge from the humble weekend Stumble and many people get caught out by being unprepared. We asked one of our group who has tackled some of Britain’s long-distance paths to share his experience and advice.
